Aside from a V-Synth at one point, most of mine have been workstations or arrangers. But I've owned one synth or another continuously for the past 30 or so years. Then found guitar which ultimately became my main instrument. That opened my eyes to the gadgetry of synths - the combination of cool toys and music is addictive to me. Hated it in the moment, but in my 20's bought a Roland D-10 to play with friends. Like many, I started with piano lessons as a child. These days I'm listening to a lot of headspace-y, mainly instrumental stuff: old Tangerine Dream, newer artists like Nosaj Thing and artists I discovery on BandCamp. Not sure why since I am really into Joy Division and anything Vince Clarke does. Oddly enough, I like but never got to love Depeche Mode and New Order.

I also was into the more outsider stuff and other 70's/80's pioneers - Caberet Voltaire, The Human League before they learned how to write songs that actually earned them a living, Fripp and Eno, Eno's solo stuff and of course, Bowie's Low. We popped it on and the first bars of "Me I Disconnect From You" threw me to the back of the room. My first real "holy this is great" moment was when I bought Replicas while on a summer break with a family friend whose dad had a mega stereo system.
I was immediately into Ultravox! and Gary Numan/Tubeway Army. I'd love to hear what your gateway drug into synths were and what your tastes are.įor me, I started collecting music during the early days of synth pop/post-punk.
My suspicion is ironic: it may be because the group here is smaller and we are not posting a whole lot every day which keeps the talks more focused.Īlso, I do get surprised to see that some of you are fellow synth nerds, the good Tweedbucket being a prime example, although not surprising. It's funny that I'm more active in synth discussions here on TGP than on my other regular sites, Elektronauts and VSE.
